Assignment 02 - Individual Design
Wall Connections

The east side gallery is the longest surviving section of the Berlin wall. Oststrand and YAAM are two beach clubs that occupy the land between the Spree River and the wall. The temporary installation creates a sectional connection from the east side of the wall to the river. The new wall is created in contrast to the existing wall as a connective surface. The folding surface is programmed as a climbing wall that allows for a literal climb over the historical division. New vantage points are created as one interacts and ascends the structure. The surface flattens and splits as it stretches to the west forming a viewing platform and a physical connection into the river.

Assignment 01 - Historical Research
Lehrter Banhof & Hamburger Bahnhof

Hamburger Bahnof opened in 1846 connecting Berlin to Hamburg.
Lehrter Banhof opened in 1871 connecting Berlin to Hanover just to the west.

In 1884 Hambuger Bahnof closed and Lehrter Banhof becomes the main station to Hamburg. Lehrter Stadtbanhof opened in 1882 as an addition to the station on the north side of the concourse. There was heavy damage to Lehrter Banhof during WWII with limited service connecting West Berlin to West Germany. Lehrter Banhof closed in 1951 and was demolished in 1957, however Lehrter Stadtbanhof remained open and continued S-Bahn service. Lehreter Stadtbanhof goes through a 10 million dollar renovation in 1987 for Berlin’s 750-year anniversary celebration. Because it had largely been preserved in its original condition, it became a listed building (historically protected). Despite the renovation and being a listed building, Lehrter Bahnhof was demolished in 2002 to make way for the current Hauptbahnhof.

Hauptbahnhof is one of 3 category 1 train stations in Berlin. A new north-south axis was installed running under the Spree river and the Tiergarten. 1,800 trains run through the station every day and the daily number of passengers is estimated to be 350,000.

Hamburger Bahnof was renovated in 1996 by Josef P. Kleihues and opened as a Contemporary Art Museum still in operation today.
